The Iowa Grants Guide (IGG) grew out of an increasing demand for information on organizations that provide financial support to non-profit groups, educational institutions, and individuals in the state of Iowa. With need and interest growing, a partnership formed between the Iowa Council of Foundations (ICOF), the Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center and the University of Iowa to fill this void with a resource that would list funding sponsors known for supporting Iowa projects and Iowans. Initial planning made it clear that a web based publication would be easier to update and maintain than any hard copy book.
Staff consulted and searched numerous publications, databases, and public records to identify sources of funding for Iowa-based projects. Letters were sent to these entities, inviting them to enter information about their organization's purpose/mission, funding areas, and other data related to their philanthropic activities. For those who did not respond or who did not complete the record, staff used the public record IRS form 990 PF and/or funders' websites to enter information about these organizations into the IGG database. Each funder was then sent a copy of their record to review for any updates/edits. Records for funders who reviewed their records are marked. Records for all other funders include information available from their website and/or most recent IRS form 990 PF.
Staff periodically update foundation profiles and add information on new foundations to the IGG database.
