The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center and the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Eastern Iowa are sponsoring the workshop Finding & Retaining Donors to be held on Friday, September 12. INRC Director Richard Koontz will conduct a workshop on Starting an Iowa Charitable Nonprofit Corporation on Saturday, October 4 from 9 am to 4 pm at the University of Iowa College of Law. The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Eastern Iowa is accepting nominations of individuals, foundations and corporations who best represent the spirit of philanthropy in their communities. The recipients will be recognized at the National Philanthropy Day celebration luncheon on November 20 at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. A panel of previous honorees will select one recipient for each of the seven categories from among Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties, the area of focus for AFP Eastern Iowa. The nomination deadline has been extended. Nominations must be received by regular mail or email no later than August 22. See AFP's award categories and criteria for more information.

Recent Reports

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) issued a report on July 3, 2014 entitled Some Tax Exempt Organizations Have Substantial Delinquent Payroll Taxes. While tax exempt organizations are not generally required to pay income taxes, they are typically required to pay payroll taxes. Even though the percentage of tax-exempt organizations with unpaid payroll taxes is small, it results in millions of dollars in lost tax revenue. TIGTA carried out a review to determine the extent of this debt and to identify what has been done to address it. Read the full report here.
